Wall - remembered as a symbol of the
division of Europe during the Cold War. It finally came down on
9 November 1989.
budget - the
European
Union spends about £60 bn each year, and the average net
contribution from Britain is about £30 per person per year.
The budget is limited to no more than 1.27 per cent of EU GDP, which
is less than 3 per cent of all public spending within the EU.
About half of the budget is spent on the CAP:
the rest goes on such things as cohesion
projects, research and education programmes, environmental schemes
and overseas aid. An agreement on the size of the budget for the
period 2007-2013 was taken in December 2006, reducing it to 1.05
per cent of GDP; it is a decision taken by the European
Council by unanimity.
