A strange kind of patriotism

After the Irish referendum, the president of Poland refuses to sign the Lisbon treaty, even though the Polish parliament gave it an overwhelming majority back in April (384 votes to 56 in the lower house, 74 votes to 17 in the Senate).

In effect, President Kaczynski is saying that the votes of the Irish people count for more in weighing up the future of the EU than the votes of the Polish parliament. A strange kind of patriotism, that.

What nonsense ! He has said that he will sign it when circumstances are such that his signature means something substantive. Until then, he is refusing to join the "ganging-up" on Ireland

Another good way of putting it...Well, not only is the future of Europe less important than a minority of EU citizens in Ireland - but the millions of people in the 20 Member States that ratified the Treaty mean less than 800 thousand Irish "no" voters.

It is time to rethink unanimity and move on with the Lisbon Treaty, and have a two speed Europe. Elections do have consequences...
